Vitamin C for Colds: The Nobel Laureate's Claim That Never Held Up
In 1970, a two-time Nobel laureate published a bestseller claiming megadoses of vitamin C could prevent the common cold. Fifty-plus years and thousands of trial participants later, the largest pooled analysis — nearly 10,000 cold episodes — found that regular vitamin C doesn't prevent colds in the general population at all. It does something narrower, and most people are taking it at the wrong time to get even that.

We searched PubMed and Cochrane Library for vitamin C and the common cold. The Cochrane review (Hemilä & Chalker, updated through multiple cycles, 31 comparisons, 9,745 cold episodes) found no reduction in cold incidence from regular supplementation in the general population — the core claim behind the entire market. What it did find: a modest, consistent reduction in cold duration (about 8% in adults, 13% in children) with daily use, and a much larger effect — incidence roughly halved — in people under extreme physical stress, like marathon runners and skiers.
Why Europe still stocks up every winter
The claim traces back to one man: Linus Pauling, who had already won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry (and would later win the Peace Prize) when he published "Vitamin C and the Common Cold" in 1970. He was not a physician, an immunologist, or a clinical researcher — but the Nobel-laureate label carried enormous authority, and the public didn't distinguish between winning a prize in chemistry and having evidence in medicine.
The claim arrived at the perfect moment: cheap, unpatentable, sold over the counter, requiring no doctor's involvement. Effervescent vitamin C tablets became a fixture of European pharmacy shelves every September, marketed as immune "support" and cold "defence" — vague enough to avoid regulatory scrutiny, specific enough to imply Pauling's original claim.
Five decades of trials followed, largely because the claim was cheap to test and impossible for the supplement industry to let go of. The evidence that accumulated is more interesting — and more limited — than either Pauling's original claim or the industry that grew around it.
What the science actually says
- No reduction in cold incidence in the general population — the core Pauling claim — across the pooled Cochrane trials in ordinary community-dwelling adults and children
- Modest, consistent reduction in duration — 31 comparisons, 9,745 cold episodes: about 8% shorter colds in adults, 13-14% shorter in children, but only with regular daily supplementation of at least 0.2g/day, not occasional dosing
- Timing matters and most people get it wrong — trials where vitamin C was started only after cold symptoms had already begun ("therapeutic" use — exactly how most people actually take it) showed no consistent benefit; the duration effect only shows up with supplementation that was already ongoing before the cold started
- A genuinely large effect exists — in one narrow group — five trials, 598 participants under short periods of extreme physical or cold stress (marathon runners, skiers, soldiers in subarctic conditions): cold incidence roughly halved
- Pauling's own supporting trials were weak — small, poorly controlled by modern standards, and the effect sizes he championed were not replicated by the much larger, better-designed trials that came after
What the label claims vs. what the evidence shows
Common marketing claims
"Supports your immune defences." "Helps fight colds." Sold in tubes of effervescent tablets every autumn across German, French, and UK pharmacy chains, often at 1,000mg per dose — implying prevention for anyone who takes it, taken any time, including once symptoms appear.
What the evidence shows
No prevention effect for the general population, regardless of when you start. A modest cut in how long a cold lasts — but only if you were already supplementing daily before you got sick. A real, substantial prevention effect — but only under extreme physical exertion or cold exposure, not everyday winter life.
Our Conclusion
Vitamin C is not the general-purpose cold-prevention supplement its market position implies, and reaching for it once your throat feels scratchy is, per the evidence, close to pointless — that ship has sailed. If you already take it daily through the winter, the honest expectation is a modestly shorter cold, not a cold you never get. If you're a marathon runner, skier, or otherwise regularly pushing your body to extremes in the cold, the evidence for prevention is genuinely strong and worth acting on. For everyone else, the extra minutes chasing effervescent tablets across pharmacy shelves buy less than the label implies.
